On February 7, Jinshi Data reported that the United States announced a 10% tariff on Hong Kong products. A spokesperson for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) government today stated that the SAR government has decided to file a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) regarding the incident. The spokesperson stated that the US’s actions seriously violate WTO rules and disregard Hong Kong’s status as a separate customs territory under Article 116 of the Basic Law and as recognized by the WTO. The SAR government will formally initiate procedures under the WTO dispute settlement mechanism to defend our legitimate rights against the US’s unreasonable measures. The spokesperson reiterated that Hong Kong has always been a staunch supporter of the rules-based multilateral trading system, and the SAR government strongly condemns the US’s actions and urges the US to correct its wrongful behavior immediately.
