Biden commutes federal death sentences, Trump's attitude is completely opposite
On December 23, Jinshi data reported that on the occasion of the departure of US President Biden, he showed leniency to 37 of the 40 federal prisoners facing the death penalty. Their sentences will be reduced to life imprisonment without parole. The three prisoners who did not receive leniency were the perpetrator of the Tree of Life synagogue shooting, the shooter of the Charleston Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church shooting, and the surviving suspect of the Boston Marathon bombing. Although the president’s power to commute and pardon is widely protected and irrevocable by the Constitution, this announcement is bound to spark partisan controversy. The US Department of Justice suspended executions in 2021 to review relevant policies and procedures. President-elect Trump had stated that he would resume executions and even attempt to expand the scope of crimes eligible for the death penalty.
