The founder of DeFiLlama, 0xngmi, accused Blockworks of reselling DeFiLlama's free data on a paid platform for 4,500 USD/year, causing a strong backlash from the cryptocurrency community. The accusation came right after Blockworks co-founder Jason Yanowitz announced the closure of the news segment to focus on software and data.

0xngmi posted a photo showing DeFiLlama data appearing on Blockworks' fee dashboard. Data head Dan Smith denied it, stating that the data has not been used since July, but 0xngmi insisted that the chart is still updated as of October 2025. The community stands with DeFiLlama, claiming that Blockworks violated the terms of use.

At the same time, the decision to lay off the journalism team at Blockworks has also faced criticism as the company boasts of “record revenue” while treating the layoffs as a minor detail.
